For the last few years I have made Academy Award predictions. And, (*trying to be as humble as possible*); I am a genius. Last year; I got pretty much all of them right and the year before that I got 20 out of 24 correct. As always, I am going to do the main categories at the beginning (the ones we actually care about) and then I am going to do a table for the others. And at the end there will be a full total, I will try to give some reasoning as to why I am backing certain people. In order to see the review I did on the movies, just click the title.
Like I say every year, I am going to be strict. By that; I am only going to pick one choice, and mention the one that I want to win, the one that should win, and the one that has a good chance at winning, all leading into the last choice which is my prediction for the winner. I say this every year; (to be honest just as a precaution if I get all these predictions wrong) I will be trying to pick some upsets. Just because I think it will boring if this list is the same as everyone else’s.
1] BEST VISUAL EFFECTS
- AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR – Dan DeLeeuw, Kelly Port, Russell Earl and Dan Sudick
- CHRISTOPHER ROBIN – Christopher Lawrence, Michael Eames, Theo Jones and Chris Corbould
- FIRST MAN – Paul Lambert, Ian Hunter, Tristan Myles and J. D. Schwalm
- READY PLAYER ONE – Roger Guyett, Grady Cofer, Matthew E. Butler and David Shirk
- SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY – Rob Bredow, Patrick Tubach, Neal Scanlan and Dominic Tuohy
Who is the favourite: AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR
Who I want to win: AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR
Who might have a chance: FIRST MAN
Unlike last year, this year; many of the films I have not reviewed as I decided to skip Reviewbruary. One of the only films I have reviewed is a small little film called Avengers: Infinity War. To see any other film winning this award would be an injustice to just how well that film was put together. Sure; whilst First Man is impressive and Ready Player One was really cool; to see the latest trailer for Aladdin and then how amazing and realistic Thanos was. Avengers to win! (I’m not only saying that because I’m a Marvel fan-boy – OK.)
FINAL WINNER – AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR
2] BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
- INCREDIBLES 2 – Brad Bird, John Walker and Nicole Paradis Grindle
- ISLE OF DOGS – Wes Anderson, Scott Rudin, Steven Rales and Jeremy Dawson
- MIRAI – Mamoru Hosoda and Yūichirō Saitō
- RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET – Rich Moore, Phil Johnston and Clark Spencer
- SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE – Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller
Who is the favourite: INCREDIBLES 2
Who I want to win: SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE
Who might have a chance: SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE
When it comes to the Best Animated Feature Film, it seems that Disney can do no wrong, they have won pretty much all of these awards, they manage to win it all the time; even Brave won an Oscar! So that is why I think it would be foolish not to put Incredibles 2 as a favourite. That being said, anyone who is anyone is expecting Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to win; not only because of the quality of film but also because of the impact it has had.
FINAL WINNER – SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE
3] BEST ACTOR
- CHRISTIAN BALE – VICE as “Dick Cheney”
- BRADLEY COOPER – A STAR IS BORN as “Jackson “Jack” Maine”
- WILLEM DAFOE – AT ETERNITY’S GATE as “Vincent van Gogh”
- RAMI MALEK – BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY as “Freddie Mercury”
- VIGGO MORTENSEN – GREEN BOOK as “Frank “Tony Lip” Vallelonga”
Who is the favourite: RAMI MALEK
Who I want to win: RAMI MALEK
Who might have a chance: CHRISTIAN BALE
I just don’t see anyone but Rami Malek taking this home; his performance as Freedie Mercury was amazing, and this award might be the only an amazing film will take home. I would also love Christian Bale to win the award but I was blown away by Rami Malek’s performance. To be honest, I am quite surprised that I don’t put Bradley Cooper up there in the running, For me; it is Rami’s to lose.
FINAL WINNER – RAMI MALEK
4] BEST ACTRESS
- YALITZA APARICIO – ROMA as “Cleodegaria “Cleo” Gutiérrez”
- GLENN CLOSE – THE WIFE as “Joan Castleman”
- OLIVIA COLMAN – THE FAVOURITE as “Anne, Queen of Great Britain”
- LADY GAGA – A STAR IS BORN as “Ally Maine”
- MELISSA MCCARTHY – CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME? as “Lee Israel”
Who is the favourite: GLENN CLOSE
Who I want to win: OLIVIA COLMAN
Who might have a chance: OLIVIA COLMAN & LADY GAGA
A little bit of a confession, I haven’t watched The Wife or The Favourite, but I am being so biased as I say I want Olivia Colman to win; I loved her in Broadchurch and hopes she can win the biggest movie award going. That being said the overwhelming favourite for this award is Glenn Close with so many critics raving her performance. Because of such; I don’t think it would be fair not to put her in pole position. Whilst Lady Gaga might have a chance – I don’t think she performed anything out of her range and because of this don’t think she should be the one to win.
FINAL WINNER – GLENN CLOSE
5] BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
- MAHERSHALA ALI – GREEN BOOK as “Don Shirley”
- ADAM DRIVER – BLACKKKLANSMAN as “Philip “Flip” Zimmerman”
- SAM ELLIOTT – A STAR IS BORN as “Bobby Maine”
- RICHARD E. GRANT – CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME? as “Jack Hock”
- SAM ROCKWELL – VICE as “George W. Bush”
Who is the favourite: MAHERSHALA ALI
Who I want to win: MAHERSHALA ALI
Who might have a chance: ?
It isn’t that I don’t think anyone else might have a chance to win the best supporting actor; it’s just that I don’t see any better performance than Mahershala Ali this year. I would quite like Sam Rockwell to win the award but again I don’t think that anyone can beat Mahershalla Ali.
FINAL WINNER – MAHERSHALA ALI
6] BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
- AMY ADAMS – VICE as “Lynne Cheney”
- MARINA DE TAVIRA – ROMA as “Sofía”
- REGINA KING – IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK as “Sharon Rivers”
- EMMA STONE – THE FAVOURITE as “Abigail Masham”
- RACHEL WEISZ – THE FAVOURITE as “Sarah Churchill”
Who is the favourite: REGINA KING
Who I want to win: REGINA KING
Who might have a chance: EMMA STONE
Whilst this category is absolutely stacked with talent and big names it seems to be the one that isn’t the biggest will take away this award. Whilst I haven’t watched “If Beale Street Could Talk” or “The Favourite”; Regina King put in a powerful performance with many critics applauding her performance. I definitely liked Amy Adams in Vice but I don’t feel a though she was vital to the film.
FINAL WINNER – REGINA KING
7] BEST DIRECTOR
- SPIKE LEE – BLACKKKLANSMAN
- PAWEŁ PAWLIKOWSKI – COLD WAR
- YORGOS LANTHIMOS – THE FAVOURITE
- ALFONSO CUARÓN – ROMA
- ADAM MCKAY – VICE
Who is the favourite: ALFONSO CUARÓN
Who I want to win: ADAM MCKAY & SPIKE LEE
Who might have a chance: SPIKE LEE
Again; I don’t see anyone winning this award but Alfonso Cuaron; he has already for Gravity. And Roma is such a heavy favourite and such a powerful film I don’t see anyone else winning. However; an outsider who might claim this award is Spike Lee for the amazing Blackkklansman; I personally loved Lee’s direction for the film and think he managed to balance the comedy and still make it so powerful. Again; selfishly I would love to see Adam McKay or Spike Lee win but Alfonso Cuaron still deserves it.
FINAL WINNER – ALFONSO CUARÓN
8] BEST PICTURE
- BLACK PANTHER – Kevin Feige
- BLACKkKLANSMAN – Sean McKittrick, Jason Blum, Raymond Mansfield, Jordan Peele and Spike Lee
- BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY – Graham King
- THE FAVOURITE – Ceci Dempsey, Ed Guiney, Lee Magiday and Yorgos Lanthimos
- GREEN BOOK – Jim Burke, Charles B. Wessler, Brian Currie, Peter Farrelly and Nick Vallelonga
- ROMA – Gabriela Rodríguez and Alfonso Cuarón
- A STAR IS BORN – Bill Gerber, Bradley Cooper and Lynette Howell Taylor
- VICE – Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Adam McKay and Kevin J. Messick
Who is the favourite: ROMA; BUT REALLY ANY
Who I want to win: BLACK PANTHER
Who might have a chance: BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
Regardless of who wins it is safe to say that history will be made with this award. The problem with guessing who will win this award is that all the clues that are used to assemble the winner have gone to different films, so it is hard to predict. If Roma wins, it will be the first NETFLIX film to win and a foreign film to win the biggest award of the night. If Black Panther wins, it will be the first (*breathes*) superhero film to win the biggest award of the night. If Bohemian Rhapsody wins it will be the first film to win where the director was fired. As much as I hope Black Panther wins; I think it might be time to wake up as the dream is over. I expect Roma to win this one.
FINAL WINNER – ROMA
Just like the other awards during the Oscars, I am going to just casually put them in here because we know no wants to see them…
