This is a post I have wanted to publish for some time now, and I thought it couldn’t be more fitting than releasing it on the day the second season of the The Punisher was released. And, over the last couple of months a lot has changed, first up: Iron Fist was rightfully killed (I mean who watched that!), then Luke Cage had its plug pulled; which I could still understand. But, my some miracle Daredevil was also cancelled; which basically confirms this has nothing to do with the reception or viewing figures but rather some internal politics. And after yesterday’s post which was a review for Daredevil season 3, I have reviewed every single Marvel Show (of course Iron Fist is not included). And I have decided that The Punisher season 2 will be the first I will not review and this will probably be the last post on NETFLIX shows I make.
The only place to start is with the muddy water that is the internal politics within the Marvel TV! You have to ask why suddenly, they have cancelled all of the Marvel shows. The same shows that are owned by Disney, who is aiming to launch their own rival streaming service later this year. And, as I said – whilst I understand the cancellation of Iron Fist and am willing to forgive Luke Cage, the cancellation of Daredevil was completely unjust. Especially after how amazing the last season was. And, NETFLIX can’t say it is because the ratings have fallen for three reasons. First, NETFLIX still advertise the MARVEL shows to sell NETFLIX – so they know it is still a selling point, b) just because the views in the opening week are down doesn’t mean the overall views for the show aren’t consistent, and c) they never seemed to mind when the viewing figures were low for season 2 of Daredevil and Jessica Jones. So yes – whilst the views are down, that is normal, this is expected for pretty much every TV show. So; you have to question if it was fair on the Marvel shows?
Plus, maybe the way we watch NETFLIX has changed. As I said, just because it isn’t the same viewing numbers doesn’t mean the views they are getting still isn’t good. Pretty much, I think we are moving forward with our home entertainment to the point that the whole ‘binge-watching’ phase is going away. I don’t think it is a must to watch the show in its entirety within its first weekend. As I will explain, these shows lost their way a little – with Daredevil season 3 reminding all what they have got. And, a really good question is would you sacrifice these TV shows in order to get something new like a Loki TV Show?
However; it isn’t fair just to blame NETFLIX for the situation Marvel TV finds itself in at the moment. These shows failed to successfully build a world, whilst the MCU has done it. These shows never, the Defenders was supposed to increase hype, but instead it did the opposite. And, it was definitely hindered by that, not only did The Defenders do the opposite – but Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Daredevil season 2 all struggled and there is no-one to blame but Marvel themselves.
Nevertheless. It is sad to say bye to Daredevil, and honestly no point of watching Jessica Jones or The Punisher, as they both will almost definitely be the last Marvel shows on NETFLIX. I do hope we get to see them again though
