Last year I made some Oscar predictions – which by the way, I got 20 out of 24 correct – and because I am so great at these predictions.. and I’ve spent so long reviewing all the Oscar films, so I could talk about them now. I am going to do the main categories at the beginning (the ones we actually care about) and then I am going to do a table for the others. And at the end there will be a full total, I will try to give some reasoning as to why I am backing certain people. In order to see the review I did on the movies, just click the title. This year, I am going to be strict, in that sense I am only going to pick one choice, last year I would go for two and say I know this one is going to win but I want to go for the other one, but this time I want to only say one winner. The one that I want to win, the one that should win, and the one that has a good chance at winning, and at the end I will pick the actual winner

1] WRITING (ADAPTED SCREENPLAY)
  • CALL ME BY YOUR NAME  – James Ivory based on the novel by André Aciman
  • THE DISASTER ARTIST  Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber based on the book by Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell
  • LOGAN – Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber based on the book by Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell
  • MOLLY’S GAME  – Aaron Sorkin based on the memoir by Molly Bloom
  • MUDBOUND – Virgil Williams and Dee Rees based on the novel by Hillary Jordan

Who is the favourite: CALL ME BY YOUR NAME
Who I want to win: LOGAN
Who might have a chance: MUDBOUND

As I said at the beginning I only really like to put the categories that we all care about on this list but because Logan is nominated I had to  put this in the main list. I really want Logan to win, it was one of my favourite films in 2017 and I think an Oscar would be the perfect end to the prefect end. I would have definitely put The Disaster Artist up there as well but considering James Franco wasn’t nominated for Best Actor I don’t think the Oscars want to go near that film, so I don’t think it will win. And that only really leaves Call Me By Your Name, a film that many have already given the Oscar to. So whilst I really hope Logan wins, it is going to be Call Me By Your Name

FINAL WINNER –  CALL ME BY YOUR NAME

2] BEST VISUAL EFFECTS
  • BLADE RUNNER 2049 – John Nelson, Gerd Nefzer, Paul Lambert and Richard R. Hoover
  • GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 – John Nelson, Gerd Nefzer, Paul Lambert and Richard R. Hoover
  • KONG: SKULL ISLAND – Stephen Rosenbaum, Jeff White, Scott Benza and Mike Meinardus
  • STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI – Ben Morris, Mike Mulholland, Neal Scanlan and Chris Corbould
  • WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES – Joe Letteri, Daniel Barrett, Dan Lemmon and Joel Whist

Who is the favourite: BLADE RUNNER 2049
Who I want to win: WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES
Who might have a chance: WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES

Blade Runner 2049 is the definite favourite to win the award, but I think it is about time that we shows some love to a film that the Oscars have done a lot of injustice to – War for the Planet of the Apes. It is about time that this trilogy wins something. I also kind of hope Guardians of the Galaxy is in with a shot but I don’t think that it deserves to win anymore than the other nominated films.

FINAL WINNER – WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES

3] BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
  • THE BOSS BABY – Tom McGrathand Ramsey Ann Naito
  • THE BREADWINNER – Nora Twomey and Anthony Leo
  • COCO – Lee Unkrich and Darla K. Anderson
  • FERDINAND – Carlos Saldanha
  • LOVING VINCENT – Dorota Kobiela, Hugh Welchman and Ivan Mactaggart

Who is the favourite: COCO
Who I want to win: COCO
Who might have a chance: THE BOSS BABY

When it comes to the Best Animated Feature Film, it seems that Disney can do no wrong, they have won pretty much all of these awards, and they manage to win it all the time, with Brave winning and it not exactly being the best animated film. That being said, Coco is an incredible film and so it really does deserve to win.

FINAL WINNER – COCO

4] BEST ACTOR
  • TIMOTHÉE CHALAMETCALL ME BY YOUR NAME as “Elio Perlman”
  • DANIEL DAY-LEWISPHANTOM THREAD as “Reynolds Woodcock”
  • DANIEL KALUUYA – GET OUT as “Chris Washington”
  • GARY OLDMANDARKEST HOUR as “Winston Churchill”
  • DENZEL WASHINGTONROMAN J. ISRAEL, ESQ. as “Roman J. Israel”

Who is the favourite: GARY OLDMAN
Who I want to win: DANIEL KALUUYA
Who might have a chance: DANIEL DAY-LEWIS

Reasons Gary Oldman will win: 1) Churchill, 2) Make-up. As much as I would love Daniel Kaluuya to win for his performance in Get Out, I really think this will be Gary Oldman’s award. The only other nominee who might have a chance is Daniel Day-Lewis in his final role before his retirement, as much as I love Denzel Washington, he is only there because it is Denzel Washington, he didn’t really deserve it for his film.

FINAL WINNER – GARY OLDMAN

5] BEST ACTRESS
  • SALLY HAWKINS – THE SHAPE OF WATER as “Elisa Esposito”
  • FRANCES MCDORMAND – THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI as “Mildred Hayes”
  • MARGOT ROBBIE – I, TONYA as “Tonya Harding”
  • SAOIRSE RONAN – LADY BIRD as “Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson”
  • MERYL STREEP – THE POST as “Katharine Graham”

Who is the favourite: FRANCES MCDORMAND
Who I want to win: MARGOT ROBBIE
Who might have a chance: MERYL STREEP

The overwhelming favourite for this award is Frances Mcdormand, but I honestly don’t think that she was given enough screen-time to carry the film, but nevertheless she still gave an amazing performance. I would liked Margot Robbie to win for her role in I, Tonya but all signs lead to another award for Frances Mcdormand, of course we do have some royalty in Meryl Streep she always has to be nominated, so she could well be in with a shout.

FINAL WINNER – FRANCES MCDORMAND

6] BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Who is the favourite: WILLEM DAFOE
Who I want to win: SAM ROCKWELL
Who might have a chance: SAM ROCKWELL

When I was reading, I saw that Willem Dafoe is favourite, I still think that Sam Rockwell will and should win because his performance was amazing, I quite liked Woody Harrison in Three Billboards, but Sam Rockwell did steal the show. Christopher Plummer is also there but I don’t think he will win, just because although what he did was amazing, replacing Kevin Spacey, I don’t think he gave a better performance this time around. I really want Sam Rockwell to win, I think he gave the best performance out of the lot.

FINAL WINNER – SAM ROCKWELL

7] BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
  • MARY J. BLIGE – MUDBOUND as “Florence Jackson”
  • ALLISON JANNEY  I, TONYA as “LaVona Golden”
  • LESLEY MANVILLEPHANTOM THREAD as “Cyril Woodcock”
  • LAURIE METCALF – LADY BIRD as “Marion McPherson”
  • OCTAVIA SPENCER THE SHAPE OF WATER as “Zelda Delilah Fuller”

Who is the favourite: ALLISON JANNEY
Who I want to win: ALLISON JANNEY
Who might have a chance: OCTAVIA SPENCER

I really like Octavia Spencer, and I really like Allison Janney – so I hope that it is between the two of them, it is funny as well because Janney stars in CBS’ hit show “Mom” by Chuck Lorre, and Octavia Spencer guest starred in a couple of episodes asking Christy (Anna Faris – Allsion Janney’s daughter) to stash some money for her before she went to prison, she then came back of many more guest appearances. So I really don’t mind who wins, but I have watched I. Tonya, and I really liked Janneys performance. I also really liked Lesley Manville, and she is one of my favourite actresses.

FINAL WINNER – ALLISON JANNEY

8] BEST DIRECTOR
  • CHRISTOPHER NOLAN – DUNKIRK
  • JORDAN PEELE – GET OUT
  • GRETA GERWIG – LADY BIRD
  • PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON – PHANTOM THREAD
  • GUILLERMO DEL TORO – THE SHAPE OF WATER

Who is the favourite: GUILLERMO DEL TORO
Who I want to win: JORDAN PEELE
Who might have a chance: CHRISTOPHER NOLAN

Although I really hope he does, I doubt Jordan Peele is going to win, although he was amazing in directing Get Out – something I say in my review. I think the Academy are just not that likely to give it to him, but I think it is between it is Christopher Nolan or Guillermo Del Toro, I think Nolan was amazing in directing Dunkirk and the reason that the film was so well recieved was beacuse of him, as I once again said in my review. But that being said Del Toro is getting all the buzz and it was a beautifully shot film, so although I think this is the tightest of competitions, I think Del Toro will win.

FINAL WINNER – GUILLERMO DEL TORO

9] BEST PICTURE
  • CALL ME BY YOUR NAME – Peter Spears, Luca Guadagnino, Emilie Georges, and Marco Morabito
  • DARKEST HOUR – Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Lisa Bruce, Anthony McCarten, and Douglas Urbanski
  • DUNKIRK – Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan
  • GET OUT – Sean McKittrick, Jason Blum, Edward H. Hamm Jr., and Jordan Peele
  • PHANTOM THREAD – JoAnne Sellar, Paul Thomas Anderson, Megan Ellison and Daniel Lupi
  • THE POST – Amy Pascal, Steven Spielberg, and Kristie Macosko Krieger
  • THE SHAPE OF WATER – Guillermo del Toro and J. Miles Dale
  • THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI – Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin, and Martin McDonagh

Who is the favourite: THE SHAPE OF WATER
Who I want to win: THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI
Who might have a chance: DUNKIRK

I feel as though The Shape Of Water is the favourite to win, it is almost as “Oscar-baity” as The Post, but that being said, for me personally it wasn’t that great a film and if you take away the visual aspect, there a better films in the category. As much as I loved Dunkirk and Get Out, and I would love them to win an Oscar, I don’t think Get Out will win, just because once again it isn’t “Oscar-baity”. So to me, it is a three-horse race between Shape of Water, Three Billboards and Dunkirk, and I absolutely loved Three Billboards and I think it deserves to win out of those three. Although I loved Dunkirk, I don’t think it was the “Best Picture”, this is evident in the other categories, with them not being nominated in any individual categories, that is because there were no stand-out performances, it was really well-directed and beautifully shot but there were no individual performances, and in order to win an Oscar, there needs to be strong indivudal performances.

FINAL WINNER – THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI
